At my wedding showerover 33 years ago, my husband’s Mom presented me with a very special gift of several Kreppein Family Recipes. Among those recipes was one she called “Kreppein Kandy.” She made this old fashioned hard candy every year, placed it into pretty tins or jars, and gave it to family and friends for Christmas.

Over the years I have made many batches of this candy. My kids think it is the best gift for theirteachers and friends. I usually make this hard rock candy in traditional colors and flavors such as:

  • red – cinnamon
  • green – mint
  • yellow – lemon
  • blue – coconut

This year I decided to mix it up a bit to go along with my Coastal Christmas theme. Instead of Kreppein Kandy, I made Sea Glass Candy! Isn’t it pretty!

Sea Glass Candy would also go great with a Mermaid or Sea themed birthday party. Add it in pastel colors to an Easter table. There are so many possibilities!

Heat on medium-high heat, stirring occasionally until it reaches a hard candy boil, 290 degrees.
Invest ina good candy thermometer. You cannot make this candy without one, and it will last for years. I’ve had the one pictured for 25+ years!

Remove from heat and carefully add 2 teaspoons of oil candyflavoring and about 10 drops of food coloring of your choice. Use a long handled spoon for stirring because it may spatter a bit when adding the flavoring and food coloring. Stir well.

Here are some color/flavor combination suggestions:
red/cinnamon, green/peppermint, orange/orange, yellow/lemon and blue/coconut.
There is no wrong combination here. Choose colors and flavors your family will love.

Pour into prepared pan and spread out evenly. Allow to cool completely. Candy will harden as it cools.

When completely cooled, wrap the end of a hammer with plastic wrap and use it to break the candy into bite sized pieces. If you have a meat tenderizer mallet, this would work, too. My kids think it’s pretty awesome to use a hammer in the kitchen, though.
