These gingerbread snowflakes are so tasty and although you’ll need some elbow grease or a mixer to make them they are a little bit chewy and the kids love them. Snowflake Gingerbread Cookies to Bake with Kids
Ok so these do take some elbow grease especially if like me you don’t have a stand mixer but from when the kids were tots they’ve made them every year and now as tweens are capable of baking them themselves.
These are chewy cookies not the hard gingerbread men that snap which is what we like as a family.
We’ve used them both as cookies but also as decorations for the tree and house I just coated them in mod podge before hanging them up.
Ingredients For Making Gingerbread Snowflake Christmas Cookies with Kids

Snowflake Cookie Cutters with cutouts – Amazon US and Amazon UK
350 g plain flour (all purpose)
1 tsp ground ginger
1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
115 g softened unsalted butter
175 g soft light brown sugar
2 tbsp ofblack treacle (molasses)
1 medium egg
Milk if needed
100 g icing/powdered sugar
Variety of sugar decorations such as silver stars, balls and sugar crystals

How to Make Your Very Own Christmas Gingerbread Snowflake Cookies

One of the things I loved doing when my kids were little was letting them sit on the kitchen counter and help me cook. It was essential when making these snowflake cookies as T at the time was much too small to see over the surface and into the bowl.
Making the breadcrumb texture with the cookies is really difficult for kids but with their and your hand in the large mixing bowl you can mix it together and combine the butter with the flour.
You may need to add a little milk if the mixture doesn’t form a dough easily – add a little milk and knead and then add a little more until you form the dough.
Lightly flour the work surface so that you don’t have a problem with the gingerbread dough sticking.
Take a snowflake cookie cutter (I’ve shared some above the ones from the pictures is from Lakeland in the UK) and cut out several snowflake shape cookies from the dough. Make the leftover dough into a ball and roll out again. Cut more until you have used up the dough as much as possible.
Using the Snowflake cutter we have I found it really useful to have a skewer handy to poke out the bits of the snowflake that were cut out.

Ingredients
- 350 g Plain Flour (All Purpose)
- 1 tsp Ground Ginger
- 1 tsp Bicarbonate of Soda
- 115 g Butter softened
- 175 g Soft Light Brown Sugar
- 2 tbsp Black Treacle (Molasses)
- 1 Medium Egg
- Milk (If needed)
Icing
- 2 Egg Whites
- ¼ tsp Cream of Tartar
- ¼ tsp Vanilla Extract
- 250 g Icing Sugar Powdered
Instructions
Preheat the oven to 190C.
Place the dry ingredients into a large mixing bowl and rub in the butter until it has a breadcrumb consistency.
Add the light brown sugar and stir thoroughly.
Next, make a well in the centre of the mix and add the beaten eggs and black treacle.
Stir until it makes a firm dough. If the mixture doesn’t form a dough easily – add a little milk at a time, kneading and adding more milk if necessary.
Place the dough on a lightly floured surface and roll it out until it is around 5mm thick.
Using a snowflake cookie cutter cut out several shapes from the dough.
Make the leftover dough into a ball and roll out again. Repeat until the dough is used up.
Put the snowflakes onto a greased or lined baking tray and bake in the oven for 7- 10 minutes until light golden brown.
Remove and cool on a rack.
Icing
Using the stand mixer, combine the egg whites, cream of tartar, vanilla and icing sugar and mix until combined and stiff peaks form.
Scoop out and decorate using a spoon or piping bag as you want.
Add sprinkles, sugar crystals, balls or snowflakes to finish off.
Notes
