These Wonton Apple Pies are a super fun way to get your apple pie fix. With a warm cinnamon apple filling and crispy crunch, they’re great for parties or Thanksgiving day snacking!

The Unstoppable Force of Apple Pie

Well, it’s November (whaaaaat?), which means its officially pie time. Truthfully, pie isn’t my favorite dessert. I won’t turn it down, but I actually prefer a good blackberry peach cobbler or crisp over a pie.

But there’s something about November. The leaves fluttering from their limbs. The colors. The wind. There’s something about big, crowded tables, and a house warmed by a rusty furnace and an oven that’s been cranking all day.

I think pie develops some kind of gravitational pull this time of year. It sucks us in. It draws us, zombie style, to the dessert table, even after we’ve stuffed ourselves silly with oven roasted turkey and gravy and dressing. MUUUST….EEEEAT…PIIIE.

A few weeks ago, I felt the pull begin to itch at the corner of my brain, but I didn’t have time to make a Caramelized Apple Pie or Amish Apple Fry Pies.

I didn’t have an extra buttermilk pie crust in the freezer, but what I did have was a bunch of leftover wonton wrappers. I remembered the Wonton Mozzarella Sticksand thought, Heeeeey…why can’t they be dessert?

And that was that. Soon, these Wonton Apple Pies were born. These crispy little pockets were dunked in warm, salty caramel sauce, and a girl in sweatpants and an apron (who shall remain nameless) died a thousand happy deaths at the first bite.

I’m so excited to show you how to make them yourself and satisfy your own irresistible pie craving!

Ingredients Needed

First, let’s gather our ingredients. You’ll need:

  • Apples– Choose a crisp, tart apple that doesn’t get too mushy when cooked. I prefer Honeycrisp, Pink Lady, Braeburn, or Jonagold.
  • Brown sugar, cinnamon, and butter– These are the base of your apple filling, and also what will make your house smell amazing.
  • Wonton wrappers– These can be found in most major grocery stores. They are refrigerated, so look for them in the deli section, dairy section, or in the refrigerated section of the produce department. Use leftovers to make some homemade Cream Cheese Wontons.
  • Milk– Milk helps seal the wontons and give them a nice brown sheen.
  • If you’re making caramel sauce, you’ll also need granulated sugar, heavy cream, and salt.

How to Make Wonton Apple Pies

  1. Start by making the apple pie filling. Melt the butter in a small saucepan, then add the apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Stir until well combined then continue to cook for 2-3 minutes or until apples are softened. Remove from heat.
  2. Assemble the wontons. Do not fear! This is easier than it looks! Lay the wonton wrappers out on a sheet of parchment paper so when you’re facing them they’re in the shape of a diamond. Place about 1 Tablespoon of the apple mixture in the center of each wonton, then brush the edges with milk. Fold the bottom corner up to the top corner so it forms a triangle and press the edges together to seal (you can add more milk to the edges to help seal). Brush the top of the wontons with milk.
  3. Bake. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper then spray them lightly with cooking spray. Place the wontons on the baking sheets and bake at 425 degrees for 9-12 minutes, or until browned and crisped.
  4. Make the caramel sauce. In a large heavy pot, spread sugar in a thin, even layer. Turn burner to medium and heat until parts of the sugar begin to bubble and liquefy. Gently stir the mixture, moving the unmelted sugar to the hottest parts of the pot. Continue, stirring occasionally, until all the sugar is melted.
  5. Heat and add cream, salt, and vanilla. Meanwhile, heat cream in the microwave or over the stove, until warm (not hot) to the touch. When the sugar is completely melted and has turned a deep golden color, remove from heat. Whisk in 1/2 of the warmed cream. The mixture will bubble. Whisk in remaining cream until smooth. Stir in salt and vanilla.

Tips and Shortcuts

  • To save time, feel free to use a store bought apple pie filling in place of the homemade one.
  • You can also buy caramel sauce if you prefer.
  • These can work well in the air fryer as well. Instead of brushing them with milk, spray lightly with a neutral cooking spray. Air fry at 350 degrees for about 7 minutes.

Can you make wonton apple pies ahead of time?

These wontons are best served fresh out of the oven, however, the apple pie filling and caramel can both be made in advanced. The apple filling can be refrigerated for up to 4 days before baking, and the caramel can be made up to a week in advance and refrigerated. Reheat in the microwave before serving.

If you have leftover apple wontons, recrisp them in the oven at 400 degrees for 5 minutes or in the air fryer at 350 degrees for 2-3 minutes.

Wonton Apple Pies with Caramel Dipping Sauce

Crispy wonton wrappers hide a warm cinnamon apple filling. We love serving these Wonton Apple Pies with a homemade caramel sauce for dipping!

Ingredients

  • 2 Tablespoons butter
  • 3 small apples, such as Honeycrisp or Pink Lady, chopped small
  • 5 Tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • Pinch salt
  • 24 wonton wrappers
  • 1/4 cup milk or cream

For the caramel:

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2-3/4 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla

Instructions

  1. Melt the butter in a small saucepan over medium low heat. Add the apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Stir until well combined then continue to cook for 1-2 minutes. Remove from heat.
  2. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees.

  6. Serve the warm apple wontons with warm caramel sauce.

Notes

The caramel sauce can be made up to a week in advance and stored in the fridge. Heat in the microwave before serving.
