Polyurethane bushings from flyin miata, bushings are always a pain in the ass to install but flyin miata sent plenty o grease and it was a breeze :P !... couldn't be more happy with the ride quality. the thing before this 2 weeks ago was my Ultrashield spec miata seat from vick racing outfitters, custom welded to the factory seat rails courtesy of new business owner, Joey. http://vro.com/

Took off my Koseis with two ok, one bald, and one flat Kumho ASX and threw on stock 14s with mostly-worn Falken ZE512. Between these two mild all-season tires the Falkens are the better dry tire, it seems. BFG GForce Sports (not all-seasons!) are going on the Koseis as soon as they arrive.

This is Tire Week for me, as I also replaced the tires on my bicycle. :D

Lokrien,

What do you mean by,

"I did the hvac cool/warm flapper door adjustment and it really seemed to help. AC was much cooler running tonight."

What is the hvac cool/warm flapper door adjustment? Is there a write-up somewhere? I haven't found it in the Garage section.

It is in the garage, just not under an obvious name:

http://www.miata.net/garage/heater_cable.html

You can adjust the heater control cable, often it's out of adjustment and won't fully close the door over the heater core, leading to warm air coming out of the vents at all times.

Thank you AKADriver. Good to know.

Second question...is there a how-to covering a bypass of the coolant line to/from the core from the back of the engine? I would like to stop that part of the circulation for the summers here in Phoenix.

I put a Roadstersport III muffler on my 2000 today. Started it up with the baffle in, then took it out. It'll probably stay that way, I love the sound, nice deep, mellow tone. Steady-state throttle, you don't notice the sound much at all, no drone, but get the revs up and it really barks at you. It took me about 20 minutes to remove the OEM and get the new one in place. I took a long, thin flat blade screwdriver and pried the rubber mounts off the muffler hangars, "greased" the hangars on the new muffler with GoJo hand cleaner and slid them on. The muffler came with a gasket and new bolts. I left the ring gasket in place from the OEM, put the new flat one in place, and reused the studs and nuts from the OEM setup. No leaks. The inlet on the new muffler is about 1/2" larger than the OEM pipe.

I swear it feels better on the bottom end, seems to rev more freely. My imagination, or do others feel the same way?

Did quite a bit today! Fixed the Security system( what I fixed, the motor that locks the doors had no linkage on it so I added a strap that raped around the lock push/pull linkage and now the doors lock and unlock, I added a LED status light to the system and mounted it just above the stereo, moved the valet button to a more secure location, and programed a new key fob.) After finishing that we headed off to Calistoga Ca.( bout an hour trip there ) to pick up a heat shield and glove box from a guy on Craigslist, paid $20 for each item. Drove home( of course with the top down its about 83degress f. ) after we got home my wife swapped out the glove box and key lock. I cleaned up the heat shield, but didn't install it yet. In stead I washed the car and then conditioned the roof with Meguiars rubber & vinyl conditioner & cleaner, what a difference it made, then foamed the tires and cleaned the rims, man is it looking good!

Here are pics of LED light and the roof and after its all clean:D

woot what a weekend, saturday mourning i woke up at 2:50am to drive to south indiana 330 miles away. Got there at about 9:30 (indiana time) at about noon Me and Travis from boundaryengineering added the new 800cc injectors and installed the standalone adaptronic ECU. Got it street tuned at about 10pm we got a call from his dyno buddy to swing by. Got the dyno tunning at WOT done. I pushed 140hp and 121ft.lb. on a begi S kit on the dynojet. It simply could not push any more since it pinged if he tried to add some more timing. Today i just drove back another 330mi back to my house here. One rough weekend i tell ya.

Replaced the cotton in my PCV filter.
This filter is a added part that I made from one of the tubular glass "gas filters" available at auto supply stores.
It along with a short length of rubber hose is inserted between the Positive Crankcase Ventilator valve and the intake manifold to keep oil from getting into the small cored passageway that is on the '99's.
By wrapping a bit of cotton around the mesh filter inside the "gas filter" any oil vapor passing from the crankcase to the manifold becomes trapped inside the glass filter body.

I have to replace this cotton and de-oil the interior of my PCV filter about once every other month.

I installed this device about 7 years ago and I have never had a problem with carbon forming inside my intake manifold.

In anticipation for the upcoming winter I decided that I needed another set of wheels to mount Snow Tires on. Got a great deal on a set of Nipon Racing Type-C 15x6x35mm in awesome condition. Picked them up and popped them on the car to see what they will look like yesterday.

They came with Brand-New 195/55 R15 General Exclaim UHP. I have no need for them so they will be sold to fund the new snow tires.

oh btw from my trip to indiana, 330 miles away i got mpgs of:
31.117mpg on my way to indiana the turbo wastegate was open so it would not spool up any boost, it was also running on a stock ecu and was driven nicely between 70-72mph with the cruise on. Average A/f Ratios were 14.5-14.7 as thats what the stock ecu likes. Ambient temperature was about 55-60 degrees F and it warmed up to about 70 F at the last hour of the trip. Trip started from 3am and ended at 9:30ish am indiana time.

. On the way back i had the turbo hooked up and tuned, air fuel ratios were about 13.8-14 A/F (little richer). Speed was mainly 72-73 with few times at 80. Ambient temp was 85-90F and it was from 1-2pm to 6-7pm. Anyhow drumroll? 32.882mpg with the turbo on.

@ Triple88A: Adaptronic is a new one on me... Seems like you like it, any issues with CEL codes or reliability (do you need to constantly adjust it?)

Triple88A

30th August 2010, 20:53

once you adjust it its there to stay. You can adjust it as much as you want but the settings will not change on their own however you CAN make them change on their own via the autotune doing what you set it to do. You pick your favorites a/fs at certain load and it tunes your fuel little by little to reach those ratios. It also does that with timing using the knock sensor or something. As far as cels go, it usually tosses at least the MAF cel as the standalone removes the MAF and replaces it with a MAP. Yes you can run a vented bov without going into 9.2 A/Fs during shifts :P

Adaptronic is a sweet standalone and the guy that is the vendor (Travis) is in georgetown IN so hes not too far from you,

The unit it self is 99% plug and play. Simply unplug ur stock ecu, plug the cables in the new harness and then plug the other end of the new harness to the stock ecu. The only thing thats not plug and play is you need to cut some of the shielding of the 2 out of the 3 wires that goes to the throttle position sensor. I believe first one is gnd second is 5V then for the last wire you simply do the same thing but you use the middle wire in the plug that plugs into the stock maf and you connect that to the 3rd wire. The standalone is routed to use that wire for the map so. Very easy again, only 3 wires.

Please post here if you drove it to work, took the dust cover off it & washed it, took the engine out, pumped up the tires, turned on the lights & looked at it... etc etc, you get the idea. Nothing is too trivial to post here... Anything goes except NSFW items...

Good deal. It'll give you peace of mind. I remember one guy's parcel shelf was so rusted, it was about to crumble apart even though the carpeting looked perfectly fine and dry. Not being paranoid, just thorough. Miatas are notorious for wet passenger seat wells and sometimes parcel shelves and trunks. Another thing to check is your drain tubes.

I totaled your gas and mileage figures and over the 2,440 miles you reported I figure your average to be 30.6mpg.

Your calculation will give 31.9mpg the reason for the difference is that I used my odometer correction value in my calculation (I have a 2003 LS so I took the liberty of thinking that your odometer reads high as well) but you do confirm that Miatas can consistently average (overall) values in the over 30mpg range! BTW I do use premium on every fill!

Which poses a question: I was looking at the Randall cowl air intake duct on the FM site. Anybody have that on their NB, and does it work well? Otherwise, I was going to do what was shown on SoloMiata and duct fresh air from the chin spoiler brake duct on the left side using some flexible hose.

Why did you cut them?

Disconnect the long rear lower A arm bolt and it drops down giving you clearance to pull the struts.

My little baby was pretty scratched and chipped when I got it, so I finally got around to doing some touch-up paint today. I got all of the big spots (except for about half of them on the passenger mirror--there's about 1,000,000 of them there) and some of the smaller ones, and it looks 1,000 percent better! It's so nice to not have glaring white marks on the car any more.

Dragonfighter

5th September 2010, 22:57

Nice so you don't have to have the clutch depressed when starting the car? Where is this switch if you don't mind sharing?

It's easier to see and get to if you remove the panel under the steering column. Look at the firewall where the clutch pedal arm is, next to where the steering column passes through the firewall. You'll see a white block with a plunger that is activated by a tab on the clutch pedal arm when you press it in. This is the interlock switch. FM makes a small bracket that snaps over the switch, holding the plunger in, which keeps the switch closed. They even include the clip with their clutch kits.

OR----trace the wiring coming out of the switch, it loops up and then down to a white connector block fastened to the kick panel near the hood release. Unplug the switch at this connector, and push the pigtail up and secure it out of the way. Then, make a short jumper with some 18 ga. wire and a male blade style connector on each end, and insert the blades into the female terminals in the connector that is on the kick panel. You might want to wrap some electrical tape around the connector to keep the jumper secure and prevent any grounded shorts. That's all it takes, the car will now start in any gear or neutral without pushing in the clutch.

While you're under the dash, there are two connectors attached to the key switch, a large one with lots of wires, and a small one with just two. If you disconnect the small one, that deactivates the door ajar/key in switch chime, so you can have the key in, and play the radio with doorsopen and not go crazy from the dang ding, ding, ding. This does NOT deactivate the seat belt chime, which goes off in about 5 seconds anyway.

I did the starter interlock because my VIN falls in the group of 99-00 models that had the thrust bearing failures, and it was something on the SoloMiata site to do to lessen unlubricated pressure on the thrust bearings at startup.

I don't think I'll have a problem, as I have 46K on the car now, and most of the failures occurred at 25K or less, but why take a chance, plus it's nice to be able to start the car like an automatic, just get in and turn the key. I've always been in the habit of setting the parking brake and taking the car out of gear before starting anyway.

I swapped the stock exhaust manifold in my '99 for an '01 tubular unit. Ended up taking over 12 hours over 2 days (and about 38 skinned knuckles) due to 2 mangled nuts - the EGR tube bracket and one of the lower exhaust studs. Took me over 2 hours on each one using a Dremel tool with flexible extension, due to the lack of clearance. I must have used 2 dozen of those tiny little cutoff and grinding wheels. Then I had to go buy a metric tap and die set to clean up the stud holes on the '01 header (thank you Harbor Freight), but once I had everything cleaned up, it took less than 2 hours to button everything up and get her back on the road.

I'm pleased to report that there is a significant improvement in drivability. I don't get the sense of a big jump in power per se, but the "powerband" effect at 3500 rpm is gone. Now, it's just a smooth increase all the way through the RPMs. It actually feels like the engine had an obstruction removed and can now breathe. After seeing the cast iron stock unit, I can understand why. Feels much quicker; maybe not much increase in power, but you get there a lot faster. I haven't detected a change in the exhaust tone as others have reported after doing the swap, but I've decided that my next major mod is a new muffler; I would like to hear that engine growl a bit louder!

I have a business trip in Greenwich later this week; used to be a no-brainer to take the train from Baltimore...of course, that was pre-Miata. Forecast is 75 and sunny...looking forward to my first long road trip in my baby!

Hey 2000, yeah I know, but all the sway links were rusted so bad I had to cut them off the rear. I have new links for them and a new sway bar on the way. So I replaced the links. Since I put in coilvers dropdown was no problem in the rear. In the front I don't have a new sway bar or links so instead of cutting the links I left them on and cut the shock. Putting the new one was no problem. Putting in coilovers is a snap, taking off rusted stuff is unbelievable on this car. MIATAS AND RUST DO NOT GET ALONG, AT ALL!I have the car 1/2 inch lowered and the shocks on 2 and we'll see where that ends up. It's a big improvement in performance, though.

Today I installed some component speakers, with a 360 watt amp.

I also had the car randomly turn off on me and then turn back on 3 times in the few weeks I have had it and while installing the amp I think I figured out why. The positive battery connector was so loose that I didn't even have to loosen it to lift it off.

Also found some water under the passenger side seat carpet so i adjusted the passenger side clamp (which I noticed had a sizable gap even when latched) so that it is closing properly and shouldn't leak anymore, but I will keep an eye on it.

You might also want to make sure that your drain tubes are clear and functioning properly. Having clogged drain tubes is a very common reason for water in one's car. In case you're not aware, the tubes are located a few inches behind and to the side of each seat... down at the base of the rain rail drain gutter.

There's lots of info in the Garage section and everybody has their own way of clearing the drains. Me... I use a long, small diameter wooden dowel.

Might be nothing. Then again, it might be everything.

I'm only about 2 weeks in to my first Miata ownership, got a Black over Red 2000 with 77k miles on it off a repo lot at a local bank. Wanted one for years. It's stock i think except for some 16 inch rims off a newer model and a K&N filter. So far I've changed plugs, wires, and engine oil to Castrol Edge. Clean/reoil air filter. Changed trans nasty BLACK oil out for the motorcraft synthetic, changed the rear end oil for purple synthetic. painted the calipers and rotors. New tires. Waxed a couple times. Roadforce balance for 65 mph shimmy. Repaired 2 tears in the soft top. 4 wheel alignment. Filed one roof latch catch. Adjusted the slack out of throttle cable. cleaned the intake for CEL. replace the fog lamp bulbs. We thrashed it on a 3 day road trip including the Cherohala skyway, Tail of the Dragon, and much of the GSM park roads including Cades Cove where My wife drove while I sat up on the door! I ain't had this much fun in a while!!! All the above done via advice gleaned from the forums. THANKS!!!!

OH sorry... you asked about TODAY...
OK...
Well I have already seen my wife would like a wind screen as she's cold natured, and seeing as no time to order one before my our next road trip to Rspeed this Friday for shifter boots, I decided to have a go at making a temporary one to see if worthwhile.

Used 1/4 inch plexiglass saved from a old window and made a 6 inch extension for the stock wind block. Contoured to match the factory piece and etched 3/4 inch strip around the edge via masking and sandblasting. painted black the bottom that overlapped the factory blocker and bolted it on. took about 3 hours at zero expense. Will later etch "Pa Pa and Granny" or Zoom Zoom, MX-5 or something on the back.

It came out so well I wish I had used a new, not scratched piece of plexigless or lexan. Folds up and down and lays on the open top. At 70 -80 MPH it acted like it might blow up on it's own but that is fixed by tucking it under the first fold of the top. When it's up it bumps the back of the seats ( i run with them all the way back) so no real strain is added to the factory hinge. I do need some nicer bolts! maybe paint them black... just used what I had. Link to my photos below, sorry just iphone photos so far...

Its more normal in american muscle...as well engines like nissan silvia/skyline gtr's.

I know what your saying...it can look supermanish...but it looks nice popping as the hood is opened. Gives the engine bay a nice look when opened.

I think its too much blue and too much braided line. I can see the valve cover blue and the intake manifold polished. Steel braided I would leave for brakes and clutch. If you want to dress it up a little...pick and choose where your going to put the braiding. Keep it to...maybe only fuel lines...or only brake lines etc. Not all of it unless you want to put some diamond studs in there and go ba ba bling bling!

for reference...imagine this blue and your valve cover blue...it would look like one big blob of blue(off ebay 1.6 mani) http://oxygenworks.net/temp/parts_center/pics/pcoat/010.jpg

ACB,

I thought about that, but after topping off the coolant and looking inside, it
is so nice, clean, and shiny, you can easily see the coolant level in there. I'm
not going to worry about fabbing something up for it. I'll just leave it be, and
since my system is pretty darn leak-free at this point, I will check it weekly or
so and be worry free. Hope you get yours tomorrow, enjoy.

One last question: Are you using a Miata oil filter or a Protoge? I noticed your oil filter cooler is a tad too tall for the filter in the picture and since I use Protoge filters, I shouldn't have a problem.

I wouldn't hold my breath for an inexpensive quote from the dealer. As mentioned already, try to source a replacement engine from one of the Miata Recyclers and install it yourself.

Haha, yeah! If only I had the money. I'm only 23 and just started a new job so I've gotta get it back running asap and for as cheap as possible. I've been kidding around with my parents that I'd put a V8 in it now. Eventually, but the timing's not quite right yet. :(

I've been searching around online. I'm hoping to find one from a 2001 or newer if it'll hook right up. I don't want to run into this same problem by getting the same year engine. Installing it myself could be an option, but I might try to find a mechanic in town that can do the work for me. I'll have to call around and see what I find.

Okay, getting back on track to the thread topic… I'm going to not drive or even see my NB today because it's out of commission… :( :(

Finished my suspension. 1 inch drop all around using G/C coilovers and KYB adjustable shocks. Not hitting bumpstops and rides better than my 99 stock Mustang. Also put in rear RB solid sway bar on outside notch and all around RB links. It sticks like railroad tracks. Love it and worth it. Shocks at 2 in the front and 1 in the rear.

01+ won't hook up exactly. You won't have functionality of the VVT without swapping ECU's. The other alternative is to put your head on an 01 block. You will have a slightly higher compression ratio with the 01 block and pistons.

Got mine titled here. Stopped at an auto trim shop and got my two small holes in the top patched. Yesterday I washed it and gave it the once over to look for stuff I missed during the buying walkaround. Swapped the wiper arms as they were backwards, fixed the door switches so the interior light works, gave the interior a good scrub and protection, performed a stickerectomy under the hood (it was ridiculous), checked and adjusted tires pressures as they were all over the place. Also ordered a set of Hose Techniques hoses in black to replace the garish yellow now on it, as well as a set of Hella Supertone horns.

Installed Goodwin adjustable end-links (nice pieces Brian--thanks!!) Just another step on the suspension journey.

+1

I installed these last weekend, replacing my Racing Beat end-links since I couldn't really achieve a zero-load on the sway bar with them. To make large adjustments with the RB end-links you need to jack the car up, disconnect one end of the end-link to turn it half a turn, reconnect the end-link and lower the car onto ramps to bear its weight for final-tweak adjustments. Unlike the Good-win end-links, both ends are right threaded.

By comparison, the Good-win end-links were simple, to adjust one end all you have to do lower the car onto ramps, simultaneously reach each end-link, one per hand, spin their shafts so that both sides are not bearing weight, then tighten the locking nuts on them.

The only thing I didn't like about the Good-win end links was their Baby-Blue colour so I "fixed" them:

http://i490.photobucket.com/albums/rr263/1okie1/SwayBar/GoodwinEndLinks.jpg

http://i490.photobucket.com/albums/rr263/1okie1/SwayBar/FrontRight.jpg

I roughly sanded back the baby-blue outer coat with wet&dry sandpaper and used wrinkle-red spray to "fix" them.

Yes I know that nobody sees them anyway, but it would always be niggling at me if I left them baby-blue.

I installed a Radiator Diversion Panel. It arrived in brushed stainless, and rather dull. So, I put an aggressive pad on my Porter Cable and polished the panel with some Meguiar's #80 (the most aggressive stuff I have around the house). It didn't eliminate the brush finish but it did put a much more substantial shine on the panel.

I plan to have it polished to a mirror finish at some point.

Oh.... I applied a silver Zoom Zoom sticker and the name badge is covering 4 small holes where I drilled out rivets that formerly held a manufacturer's nameplate. Better my name on it than theirs. :D

Been wanting to add a post to this topic for a while now.

Got my new belts in and did a test fitting and color check, Turned out real well I think. Still need to get the bar in but I'll get there. (winter project)

Also removed the visors, put in a new soft top latch and painted my floor mats, They were a little on the blue side for my liking... ;)

Going to try then all black for now, but might add the white or silver to the Miata logo again.

Nothing major, but it's a start for my new miata!

Love the topic, btw.

Finally got done with my TrackDog IC install. What a pain in the arse i tell ya. Oh well now that i did all that i also got a chance to install my bov and my air temp right after the IC so finally my ecu is reading the air going into the engine right before the TB instead of reading the air temp by the filter. The Temp entering the engine was 20`C the ambient temp was 15.55`C which is roughly 68`F entering the engine and 60`F degrees ambient temp.

Also have to get a couple small trunk rattles under control and it will be just what I wanted.

Well now i gotta tune my fuel map but from what i drove it feels great. Now that i have a sensor where its suppose to be, i finally CAN tune the map right. It seems to be running perfect. I cant hear my Bov for some reason though. I got the Forge vent to atmosphere bov.

What is the depth on the sub? you could maybe do an up firing box but I am not sure how that would make the rattles any worse.

Two hour drive around rural Iowa. Perfect 70 degree and sunny day. Oddly, after reading the "correct" position for the boot straps in a thread here last night (I usually strapped them around the closest part of the top), the boot started to slip off the edges on me about an hour in. Go figure, never had any issues before.

And of course, it's already ready for another wash. This dark paint is killing me

02 front end arrived finally. Getting ready for that installation. 01+ center console arrived as well in tan...so I sprayed the degreaser, the prep primer and painted it satin black with plastic paint. Not quite happy with it...I think it needs to be matt black not satin. Will work on those things today.

I also a couple weeks ago i installed slim fans, shroud, radiator, silicone hoses, rear heater hoses, idler, tensioner, timing belt, waterpump, camshaft seals, front main seals, and various gaskets. Also filled the radiator with distilled water, water wetter, and a couple cups of coolant.

Essentially the connection of the RCA's coming out of the back of the head unit is bad. The set for the right speakers has caused the speakers to cut out sometimes, and occasionally I get an alternator whine, but if I pop the stereo out and wiggle the wire for that connection just right it goes away. Kind of strange really.

Not sure how that causes a whine in the alternator, but I understand how annoying bad connections in the audio system can be. Hate 'em!

The alternator whine may be separate, but it is so inconsistent that I am hoping not. When I get the new unit in if it still happens I will sort it out then.

The whine isn't *in* the alternator. It's *from* the alternator. It's sometimes an issue with aftermarket audio setups. You'll get a high pitched whine that mirrors the engine RPM coming through the speakers. It's caused by the alternator.

My original radiator developed a pinhole leak at the base of the cap.

I replaced it this morning with a Koyo 36mm. It has a much thicker core and takes about 50% more fluid. A couple test drives proves the heating pattern has changed. I kept the original fans. It warms up to the same normal temp and sticks there like glue no matter how I drive it.

The thing is so beautiful it's a shame it's hidden under the hood. Thats all the mechanicals I'm going to do for a while. Got to concentrate on paint.

One thing I noticed is that it holds it's heat for a real long time after shutdown. This I guess because there is such a large 'reservoir' of aluminum compared to the puny stock one.

today i replaced the drive shaft. I tried the rockford u joints it is impossible to get them centered. new drive shaft cost me $225 + tax. the new drive shaft has gotten rid of my 65mph vibration. the old u joints were notchy and needed replacement. lesson learned cost $50 for the rockford u joints. 30 minute job verses 3+ hrs and still messed up. my $.02 worth

Bryan

Exactly what it sounds like.

When you do an autocross, you inevitably will hit cones (traffic cones, used to mark the course). They will often leave a mark of hard rubber.

when you do the sway bars buy some split collars. Your front swaybar will otherwise knock side to side. On my fm if i make a right and then a quick left (vice versa), i have a loud knock.

I use RB endlinks, so my bars can't knock side to side. But I do get to enjoy deciding between 2 FM front bar settings, 3 FM rear bar settings, or the stock bar, or no rear bar. :D

With my stock suspension, Full soft front, full firm rear was my perfered autox setup..... with nearly identical F/R spring rates on the Basics, both of which are in the mid to high 300s, that probably wouldn't work.

You could probably go to Sears, buy some nylon and rubber washers, and silence the clunk.

Finally finished the interior swap at 1am this morning. The only piece from the '05 MSM that wouldn't fit were the door cards. Apparently Mazda decided to move the inside door handle about 1" towards the front of the car on the NB2. I still want to try and make them work if I can. But that's a job for another month. I'm spent!

Keep sniffing , I'd like to replace mine too with colored hoses. I think I just saw an ad for all the oses but I can't remeber where. Try googling it under a few different names. I find all kinds of stuff that way.
