Dehydrated Oranges

I found myself surprising a US reader recently. As an American the one place she associated with millions of fresh oranges was Florida.

That she assumed that most of the supply of beautiful fresh oranges came from Florida.

When she said this, I pointed out that the biggest place I have ever known for fresh oranges was always Spain and Portugal.

In fact, where we live in Portugal has so many of them, that people steal them and then sell them on to the tourists at the side of the road near shopping centres and tourist attractions.

They are not missed from the private homes that have the oranges and are orange trees that are on the side of the roads in rural Portugal.

But because of the huge supply of oranges and with more oranges being grown than people can consume, there is often requests of what to do with lots of oranges.

Though, do tell me in the comments if you associate oranges with Florida or hot European countries like Spain and Portugal as it would be wonderful to know.

Plus, as well as our free newsletter, we also have a free air fryer mini course. It is ideal for air fryer beginners or those that want to get more confident with their air fryer. The free course runs for 5 days with a new lesson delivered each day to your inbox.

Can You Dehydrate Oranges?

Yes, you can. Oranges are among many fruits that you can easily dehydrate. Even better, many of the citrus fruit family can be dehydrated together, giving you the option to mix and match.

Such as doing dehydrated oranges at the same time as our dehydrated limes or make it more fun with some dehydrated grapefruit.

Though do consider the size of your citrus fruit if doing in a batch that everything is of similar size or the smaller pieces are removed first.

Can You Dehydrate Oranges In An Air Fryer?

Yes, you can. Just like with a traditional dehydrator, many air fryers have a dehydrator setting, making it the perfect backup plan.

Though note, not all air fryers have a dehydrate setting and if they don’t, check if they can go to 55c/130f, if not you can not dehydrate with them.

This is the brand of air fryer that we are using to dehydrate in the air fryer.

Can You Eat Dehydrated Oranges?

Yes, you can. In fact, the first time I made dried orange slices in the air fryer, I binged on them. I don’t think I left any for anyone else!

They tasted so good and the next time we were out in the car, I took a supply of these dehydrated orange slices with me.

How To Cut Orange Slices?

When making dehydrated orange slices, its all about a thin slice, but not thin enough that the orange breaks.

You also want similar slices, that way they will all equally dry out together, without some still being underdone.

I also recommend that you do more orange slices than you need, that way you can discard the broken pieces of orange and the ends.

I recommend you use a mandolin as it’s the easiest way to get an even slice on your oranges, like we have done here:

Here is the link to a Mandolin we recommend if you don’t have one. Its about the only one that has not chopped my finger off!

Air Fryer OvenI recommend this air fryer oven for dehydrating fruit, and it is fantastic because there are three shelves, and you can do a small batch or a large batch of dehydrated oranges.

Storage – You need a plan of action of where you plan to keep your dried fruit. You can keep it simple by eating them all straight away (yes I do that), use a zip loc bag (I prefer this one) or you can opt for traditional pantry containers (like this one).

Oranges – If you are wondering what the best oranges for dehydrating are, then the answer is simple, as any will do. Of course, if they are over soft, it makes them very difficult for slicing and you can cut yourself with a mandolin. Therefore, I recommend oranges that are hard rather than soft.

That is, it! You probably think that are complicated ingredients and accessories to dehydrate oranges in air fryer, but there isn’t. It is also a fantastic easy recipe for air fryer beginners.

How To Prepare Oranges For Dehydrating?

I love dried oranges because unlike dehydrated blueberries or dehydrated raspberries, no extra ingredients need to be added to the oranges.

You simply just need to get your oranges out of the fruit bowl and slice up your oranges with your professional slicer.

If you don’t have time to dehydrate today, you can prepare your sliced oranges and then dehydrate tomorrow and leave them in the air fryer oven ready for later.

  • Prep. Slice your oranges into similar size slices. We recommend a professional slicer (like this one) for this and other dehydrated fruit as it can give an even cut. Then discard the ends.
  • Air fry. Load your sliced oranges onto the air fryer shelf (or shelves) and air fry for 3 hours on 55c/130f.
  • Store. Remove from the air fryer and allow to cool before placing into your preferred storage container.

Now you know how to make dried orange slices, I am sure you want to know if you can make orange chips.

Well, orange chips just require one more step and that is adding some extra virgin olive oil spray and some honey.

Simply add a drizzle of honey over your orange slices, spray with extra virgin olive oil and then air fry in the same way as with the instructions above. Reduce the cook time by 1 hour and that is how to make orange chips instead of dried oranges.

How Long To Dehydrate Oranges?

If you are wondering how long does it take to dehydrate orange slices, well, it is JUST 3 hours.

This even surprised me.

I thought it would be much longer because the orange slices are much bigger than limes. But after checking 3 hours after it started, the dried oranges were perfect.

What Do You Do With Dehydrated Oranges?

Binge on them of course. Dehydrated oranges, orange chips, or dried oranges (we all call them something different) are fantastic as a fruit snack. You can make a big batch of them and then use them for movie nights, days out, school lunches and so much more.

You can also reserve your oranges that you have dehydrated in the air fryer for decorative purposes or use them in co*cktails.

How Long Do Dried Oranges Last?

This depends on how you choose to store your dried oranges. For example, if you stored your oranges in an airtight container, in a dark pantry, then they will last at least a year.

However, if you stored your oranges in a zip loc bag in a warmer pantry, then the shelf life is more likely to be 2-3 months.

What Can You Dehydrate?

There are lots of food you can dehydrate and it’s not just about oranges. In fact, this recipe is number #8 in a summer theme we are running of fruit to dehydrate in the air fryer. Last week it was dehydrated limes, the week before it was dehydrated pears, and we can’t wait to carry on the theme.

As well as these you can also dehydrate most fruits, vegetables, herbs, and flowers. There is also the option to dehydrate other foods such as marshmallows, potatoes, and beef jerky. Though, those are the dehydrated foods I think of first as there is so much choice.

I recommend that if you are a beginner to dehydrated foods that you start with dehydrated fruit recipes from the berry family.

Notes

Setting. Note that the Power Air Fryer Oven has a weird set up. You have to press fruit and then adjust the time up to 55c and then adjust the cook time.

Swap. You can have a citrus party and do a mixture of lemons, limes and oranges and keep the same temperature and cook time.

Avoid. Discard lime ends and any orange slices that has broken as its being sliced as it will not dehydrate as well.
