21 British Foods I Desperately Wish We Had In America (2024)

    UK sandwiches > US sandwiches.

    by Crystal RoBuzzFeed Staff

    1. The WIDE array of NICE sandwiches you can get at literally every convenience store, supermarket, chemist (pharmacy), and even gas station.

Tuna and sweet corn, roast chicken and bacon, turkey with stuffing and cranberry, wild salmon and cucumber, coronation veggies — I COULD GO ON FOREVER!

    2. And, more specifically, the fact that they have variety sandwich packs, which is perfect if you can't pick ONE!

For the record, they're ALL delish.

    3. All the different types of crisps (chips, to Americans) they have — the flavors are far more unique and a lot more tasty!

Walkers (ooh, especially their Sensations line!), McCoy's, Nik Naks, Monster Munch, Hula Hoops, Quavers — once again...I COULD GO ON.

    4. Scotch eggs that are already cooked and prepackaged.

    Crystal Ro / BuzzFeed

If you don't know what a Scotch egg is, it's just a hard- or soft-boiled egg wrapped in sausage meat, coated in bread crumbs, and baked or deep-fried. Basically, they're yummy AF, but a heck of a lot of work to make yourself.

    5. Chip butties, which is literally just a french fry sandwich.

White bread, butter, big ol' chips, and some ketchup is a carb overload you probably didn't know you needed in your life until right now.

    6. Also, bacon butties — again, literally a bacon sandwich.

But ya know we're talking about the UK here, so their bacon is not like American-style bacon, but more like Canadian bacon.

    7. Cornish f*cking pasties.

This is god's food. This wonderful baked treat originates from (where else) Cornwall and contains beef, potato, turnip, onions, and YUMMINESS. I literally can't think of an American equivalent.

    8. Jammie Dodgers because they have a funny name and are also delish.

Shortbread cookies filled with strawberry filling? UH YEAHHH.

    9. Nando's! You may have heard a lot about this famous peri-peri chicken chain, and the hype is real.

OK, Nando's has actually crossed the pond and there are a few locations in the US, but they're only in Maryland, Virginia, Illinois, and Washington, DC. But I live in California, so...let's hope they keep growing stateside!

    10. The endless variety of sausage rolls.

    Crystal Ro / BuzzFeed

Who knew you could make sausage wrapped in puff pastry a dozen different ways? (I didn't until I lived in the UK!) Also, for the record, sausages in the UK are better than they are in the US; that's just plain fact.

    11. Battered sausages — it's as bad for you as it sounds, but my god is it delicious.

I am the first to admit deep-fried sausage is super phallic-looking, particularly when you're shoving this bad boy in your mouth. But add some vinegar and red sauce (ketchup) and WHO GIVES A f*ck? It's so, so good.

    12. A proper fry up (or a full English breakfast, if you will) with eggs, sausage, bacon, fried tomato, sautéed mushrooms, toast, and beans...BEANS!

The best thing you can eat on a Sunday morning.

    13. While we're talking about breakfast, toast racks.

This way your toast doesn't get SOGGY on one side! CLEVER AND CUTE.

    14. ALSO, BEANS ON TOAST!

This is a very cheap and very simple meal or even snack, but Heinz baked beans are so good! WHY DON'T WE HAVE THIS IN THE US?!

    15. Proper fish and chips from a chippy (fish and chip shop)...

Not like, you know, some random American chain restaurant that's using frozen fish!

    16. ...bonus points if you get bread and butter on the side with your fish and chips!

Kinda trashy? Yeah. Traditional as heck? YES.

    17. Having tea with EVERYTHING — especially when it's chilly out.

    I'm a tea > coffee person. DON'T @ ME.

    18. HP Sauce (also known as brown sauce) because it's like 100x better than plain ol' ketchup.

I've seen this in grocery stores here in America, but, like, it should be a STAPLE at restaurants!

    19. The fact that you can get a filled baguette sandwich just about anywhere — in particular, coronation chicken baguettes!

aricleung / Via instagram.com, Crystal Ro / BuzzFeed

I just happen to love coronation chicken the best. And YEAH, that's me on the right. LOL, "Hi!"

    20. Lilt.

21 British Foods I Desperately Wish We Had In America (18)

    Crystal Ro / BuzzFeed

What is Lilt, you say? It's a pineapple grapefruit soda and it is SO. DAMN. REFRESHING. The closest thing we have to it is Squirt, but it's STILL not as good as Lilt!!!

    21. And finally, any form of British chocolates — especially the Cadbury stuff.

Again, I know you can get some of this stuff in the US, but not, like, EVERYWHERE or EVERYTHING.
